Programme/Project Grants
Research grants are normally awarded for programmes/projects of 3-5 years’ duration. Support may be awarded for 3 years in the first instance with a final 2 years being dependent upon a review of progress over the first 3 years. Programme grants may be renewed once for a period of up to 5 years. The maximum period of funding for a particular programme will be 10 years. It is intended that the KKLF funding should not be the ‘core’ funding of any research group. Applicants should state clearly how their proposal relates to their core funding.
What will be funded
Grants will be awarded for research on aspects of leukaemia and for relevant studies on related haematological malignancies. Requests for support for basic science programmes may be considered.
Grants will also be awarded for the support of programmes associated with the care of patients with leukaemia. Phase 3 Clinical trials will not normally be supported but applications for phase 1 or 2 studies may be considered.
Proposals which are closely related to the care of leukaemia patients or to the prevention of leukaemia and related diseases are particularly encouraged.
Grants are usually awarded to give additional support to programmes already underway, the aim being to further strengthen activities which are already of high quality. It follows that the KKLF will accept proposals from groups which already have support from other agencies.
The trustees will consider proposals from both UK and non-UK based organisations. Proposals from the latter must involve some degree of collaboration with UK colleagues.
A preliminary letter or telephone call to the administration offices of the Kay Kendall Leukaemia Fund, or to one of its scientific advisers, may be helpful to determine whether or not a proposal is likely to be eligible.
Research proposal
Applicants should complete the approved Application Form and include a research proposal (aims, background, plan of investigation, justification for budget.) The research proposal should be 3-5 single-spaced pages for project grants (excluding references, costings and CV) and up to 10 single-spaced pages for programme grants. Applications should be submitted by email in addition to providing a hard copy with original signatures. The trustees will take account of annual inflation and of salary increases related to nationally negotiated pay scales and these should not be built into the application.
Salaries should generally be on nationally agreed scales.
Tenured or non time-limited appointments will not be supported.
The trustees may, from time to time, set special conditions for the award of a grant.
Final decision on the award of a grant is made by the trustees, having taken into account advice from their scientific advisers.
Application deadlines
The trustees consider proposals twice each year, normally May and October. To allow for the refereeing process, new full proposals for the May meeting should be received by 28 February and for the October meeting by 15 July. Late applications may be deferred for 6 months.
